Oaks joined the Canadian Engineers in 1915. He transferred to the RFC in November, 1917. He was wounded on 1918-08-24 and was posted back to England on Home Establishment. Post-war he was awarded the McKee Trophy in 1927 and became a well-known bush pilot in the Canadian north. He was inducted into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame in 1974.
