MacDonald enlisted in the 179 Btn. CEF (Cameroon Highlanders of Canada) on 1916-09-01.He went overseas with them and served in France until February, 1917 when he transferred to the RFC. In March he joined 15 Sqn as an observer. The squadron flew the RE-8 2-seater known as a 'Harry Tate'.
On 1917-07-11 they lost the undercarriage on their RE 8 (A3691) when they got too close to a field of corn. After pilot training during the winter of 1917-18 he was posted to 87 Sqn flying Sopwith Dolphins, and returned to France with his new unit. In action with the unit he claimed 5 victories before being shot down . On 1918-09-29, MacDonald was on an Offensive Patrol (OP) in Dolphin C5155, and was last seen south-west of Douai. He was later confirmed a POW. He was repatriated on 1918-11-29.
He died at Winnipeg General Hospital at the age of 71.
