Alexander joined the RNAS in March of 1916., serving with 3 Wing in France in early 1917 flying Sopwith Strutters. When the Wing was disbanded in April he was posted to the newly forming 10(N) Sqn in Raymond Collishaw's flight. By Spring 1918 the unit had become 210 Sqn RAF and his score had risen to 23.
