Smith learned to fly in the summer of 1916, at the American Curtiss Flying School in Virginia. He joined the RNAS in September 1916 in Toronto and Flight Sub-Lieutenant Smith received RAeC cert. #3998 on 1916-12-11. Posted to 4(N) Sqn on 1917-04-25, he scored eight victories flying the Sopwith Pup, in the month of June. His squadron was the first to receive the new Sopwith Camel. A few days later, while attempting to intercept a flight of 16 Gotha bombers, Smith was killed when his Camel lost a wing and broke up in mid-air.
