First Burial

607 County of Durham Squadron. W/O Low was unaccounted for in the Far East after its fall in early 1942 and was captured by the Japanese on February 10, 1942. Please see WO. R.C. Smith MiD for escape details.POW Death. The first we know of Low was that he was captured by the Japanese on 10 February at Palembang, Sumatra, while leading an irregular detachment of RAF airmen defending their airfield. Smith, we know, was shot down somewhere in Singapore or the Indies and captured. The two re-met at a PoW camp at Boei Glodock, Batavia (Jakarta). Together they escaped and attempted to steal a Japanese aircraft from the adjacent Kamarjam aerodrome. They managed to get one engine started before they were re-captured. Two days later they were summarily executed.(RAF Commands)
