1916-08-12: posted to 70Sqn, France. less then Two weeks later: 1916-08-24: Hopwood was missing in Strutter, A-879; when he was hit by an artillery shell at Marcoing and went down in a spin while on offensive patrol between Valenciennes and Cambrai. His air-gunner, 23942 Gnr Charles Rapley Pearce, (Canadian) was also missing. Both men were accepted as dead.

Captain Robert Gerald Hopwood has no known grave.
