1917-12-11: posted to 5Sqn, France. 1918-01-29: Gilbert was OK in RE-8, A-4712; after a forced landing near Maroeuil due to engine trouble during a photography mission. His observer, Capt George Murray, (British) was also OK. 1918-02-16: Gilbert was missing in RE-8, A-4423; during a bombing mission to Courrieres (alone in the aircraft to increase the bomb load). It was later learned that he had been shot down and made POW. He was repatriated 1918-12-14.
