Two officers from this unit were drowned in Lake Winnipeg. 140102 F/L RL MacDonald Air/P and 243637 F/O CG Leadbeater Air/P were on a sailing excursion in an 18 foot sailboat, and were reported missing about 1930 hours as they were to have returned at 1830 hours. At 2036 hours a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain and gusty winds passed over the Gimli area, during which time it is believed the two officers became victims of the treacherous Lake Winnipeg waters. Their bodies were recovered on 20 June 1962 with life jackets attached. Their deaths were believed to be due to exposure.
