1917-07-13: Matheson died in DH-4, A-7421; when he was attacked by six enemy aircraft, West of Audenarde and last seen going down in a steep spiral on a bombing raid. Both Matheson and 2Lt Frank Lambton Oliver, his air-gunner, (British) were killed in the crash.
