Thomas was missing in DH.9, D-7362. He was hit by fire from an enemy aircraft and landed in enemy territory just South-West of Charleroi, on a photo recce mission. He was made a POW and was repatriated 1919-02-28. His air gunner, 2nd-Lieut James Hamilton Reid Smith, (British) age 19, was killed in the crash.
