McAlpin was an American citizen who came to Canada to join the RAF. He married his wife here (she was from Ontario). 1918-10-28: McAlpin died in Brisfit, C-4692; when he collided in mid-air with B.F. E-2550 (pilot Cadet Arthur Edward Johnson [Canadian]) and crashed into sea. Both airmen were alone in their aircraft and both were presumed dead at the time. The bodies were not recovered.

2nd-Lieutenant Donald Davis McAlpin has no known grave.
