Lush was a Scottish immigrant to Canada, working in Toronto as a clerk. With the outbreak of war, he returned to England and enlisted in the Royal Engineers as a Sapper (Pvt,) from Canada. He served with them in France before transferring to the RFC. The Gazette 1917-04-26, confirmed him a 2nd-Lieutenant and he earned RAeC cert.7806 on 1917-07-31. For reasons not explained in the documents he was found to be "unfit" as a Flier and was moved to the General duties list, while keeping his rank, where he remained until 1919.
