Viney first enlisted in the RNAS Armoured Car Service in April 1915. Shortly afterward he transferred to the RNAS and completed the work for his RAC pilots Cert. at Eastbourne on 1915-07-01 (Certificate # 1384). By early 1916 he was with No.5 Naval Wing. He failed to return from a bombing raid in Strutter 9384 on Mariakerke Aerodrome, Ostende Belgium. From all sources it appears that Viney set his Strutter down in the sea off Ostende after the raid, in the hopes of a rescue that did not come. Memorial at Downton Baptist Churchyard, Downton, Wiltshire Unitary Authority, Wiltshire, UK
