1917-09-14: Billings was attached to the Australian Flying Corps at the time of his death. He had completed his pilot training and was to go on for advanced training when he took a final flight. He fell out of his aircraft at a height of 1,500 - 2,000- feet when the pin on one side securing his safety belt broke after a loop, allowing it to open. His body was found a mile from where his plane crashed.
