Wightman joined the Canadian Engineers as a Lieutenant and part of the CEF on 1917-12-19. He moved to the RNAS as a probationary sub-Lieutenant om 1918-04-18. He was posted to 208 Sqn in France. After three operational crash landings between April and October 1918, Wightman was switched to aircraft deliveries to and from the squadron. The squadron re-equipped with the Sopwith Snipe just before the end of the war.
