427 Lion Squadron (Ferte Manus Certe) RAF Leeming. Halifax BV aircraft DK 181 ZL-Z experienced multiple engine issues and turned back early from a raid to Leipzig, Germany. Pilot Pilot Officer WA Cozens (RAFVR) ordered the crew to bail over England, which they did but as he was about to bail himself, one engine began to run normally again. Pilot Officer Cozens resumed control and crash-landed safely at RAF Woodbridge with minimal damage to the aircraft Pilot Officer Cozen's crew, Flying Officer RA Carson (RCAF), Sergeant RB Nairn (RCAF), Sergeant J McGowan (RAFVR),Sergeant WL Stockford (RAFVR), Sergeant H Whittaker (RAFVR) and Sergeant C Hopper (RAFVR) all bailed safely and survived. Sergeant Hopper was the only casualty with a broken ankle |
