Dunn enrolled in the Bleriot Flying School at Hendon on 1914-01-23. He graduated on 1914-09-07 as a First Class Pilot. Dunn's first assignment was as a part of a coastal patrol scheme for the British east coast. This was cancelled before a month was out. He was posted to 3 Sqn in France and flew Bleriot no. 681 from Dover to the 3 Sqn Aerodrome at St-Omer, France and was commissioned in April 1915, being promoted to Captain in December 1915.
