Wright was living in Dunedin, Gosforth, Newcastle when he enlisted in the RFC. After flight training he was posted to 7 Sqn flying the 2-seater Voisin reconnaissance machine. His success in 7Sqn and later as CO of 22 Sqn earned him a direct promotion from Lieutenant to Major and Squadron Commander. This was a VERY rare occurrence. He ended the war as a flying instructor at 33TDS.
