Gardner was killed in a flying accident on 1915-01-19 while making a descent after a flight. His Maurice Farman biplane crashed and caught fire, and he was burned to death before he could be extracted. According to the evidence, the machine was flying perfectly and began to descend normally, but when about 100 ft. up, it suddenly dived almost vertically. On contact with the ground the engine was thrown forward on to the petrol tank and the wreck burst into flames.

Lieutenant Maurice Leigh Gardiner was cremated.
