On 1914-10-27 Mayne and his pilot were ordered out on a reconnaissance of Lille in a strong westerly gale. Because of the strong, adverse wind they were unable to regain the lines and were made prisoners when they descended. They were interned in Holland at Crefeld and were repatriated 1918-11-18.
