Flight Lieutenant Ash & Flight Lieutenant Vernon were on a scouting expedition in a Short Admiralty Type 74 Seaplane No. 77 looking for German submarines off the east coast of Scotland. They left Dundee at 4.15 pm on 29th September, 1914 & failed to return.They died by drowning in the North Sea on either the 29th or the 30th of September, 1914. Their bodies were not recovered for burial. Vernon had been invalided out of the Royal Navy, but re-joined in 1910.

Flight Lieutenant Henry Doone Vernon has no known grave.
