Gates died of injuries suffered during a forced landing in the UK, on 1914-09-10. He was flying Henry Farman No. 940 at the time and had gone up in search of enemy aircraft but, in endeavouring to land to deliver his report, he misjudged his height in the dark. Gates crashed at Hendon to end his anti-zeppelin patrol. He died four days later, on the 14th. The crash damage to the aircraft was repaired and it was put back into service.
