Lindop gained RAeC aviator's certificate number 754 on 1914-03-24. He joined 3 Squadron and travelled to France with them by sea on 1914-08-12. Less than a month later, on September 7 he was forced down and made a PoW. He was interned in Holland on September 9 and spent the war in Germany. He was repatriated to Holland on 1918-11-22.
