His Air Mechanic Robert Keith Barlow died in the same crash, near Netheravon, Wiltshire. Skene is buried in St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Surrey, England. He was one of the first members of the RFC in 1914 and on August 12 was en route to Dover and France at the start of the First World War. He and his mechanic were the first members of the Royal Flying Corps to die on active duty and among the first British casualties of the war.
