Herbert enlisted in the PPCLI Regiment in 1914-10-01 in Levis, Quebec. He later joined the RFC. After flight training he was posted to 103 Sqn 1918-04-13. He was injured in a flying accident 1918-05-17 when his DH-9 struck telephone wires on his landing run in. His gunner 2Lt HTG Robey (British) was also injured in the crash.
