Tempest was of English birth, in 1912, he came to Canada to farm in Purdue Saskatchewan. They returned to the U.K. on the outbreak of war to enlist. Tempest was commissioned in KoYLI On 18 August 1915 he was granted Royal Aero Club Certificate 1604 and on 3 November he was posted to the General List. He served in 3 other RFC squadrons before making his mark in 64 Sqn, where he scored 17 victories by mid-August, 1918. He remained in the RAF after the war. While serving with 216 Sqn in Iraq on 1921-12-17 his Airco DH.10 Amiens crashed on takeoff practicing for a airmail flight at an aerodrome in West Baghdad. He died as a result of his injuries and is buried in North Gate War Cemetery, Baghdad.
