In April 1916 Smith enlisted in the East Kootenay Regiment, 54th Btn CEF. He applied for transfer to the RFC while still in Canada, and was approved. After completing flying training in Canada. On 1917-08-12 he was posted to "A" Flight of 45 Squadron RFC. By 1918-10-01 he had accounted for 7 enemy aircraft. On 1917-10-28 he flew a ground attack strafing mission and was shot down and made PoW. He was repatriated on 1918-12-17.
