McKeever joined the Queen's Own Rifles, CEF in 1914. He served in the trenches of France for two years before his move to the RFC with his elevation to the rank of to 2nd Lieutenant on 1916-12-05. He joined 11 Squadron on 1917-05-28, flying Bristol Fighters.He became the most successful Brisfit pilot/gunner pair of the war with 31 confirmed victories. With the end of the war he took command of Canadian Air Force No. 1 Fighter Squadron. In 1919 he took a job at Mineola Field, Long Island, as Aerodrome Manager., but was injured in a motor accident on September 3. He lingered for some time but finally succumbed to his injuries on Christmas Day, 1919,
