McGoun enlisted in the 24th Battalion CEF (Victoria Rifles) on 1914-10-23. He went to France with the unit and served in the trenches there. He was transferred to the 23rd Reserve Battalion because the medicos were having difficulty getting a wrist wound to heal properly. He was discharged from 23rd Reserve Battalion in the Spring of 1917 and enlisted in the RFC in April 1917. He was in training until the end of September and joined 20 Squadron in late 1917 and remained with them until early 1918 when he was posted to 22 Squadron as a Flight Commander. He scored the last of his 9 confirmed victories on 1918-04-12. He left England by way of Liverpool on 1918-06-15 en route to New York. He was demobbed on 1919-05-01.
