Babbage was a private in the 21st Btn. Royal Fusiliers when he applied for a transfer to the RFC. He was promoted to Temp. 2nd Lt. (on probation) on 28 1917-03-28. After pilot training he was posted to 20 Sqn flying FE2d's and Bristol Fighters. Between May and October, 1917 he scored five victories.
