Hartney joined the 28th (Northwest) Battalion CEF, as a Lieutenant. He transferred to the RFC and served in 20Sqn., flying the FE2d. He became an air ace in it. He became an American citizen in 1917-10-00, and transferred to the US Air Service as CO of the 27th Aero Squadron. He was later promoted to OC 1st Pursuit Group.
