415 Swordfish Squadron (Ad Metam) RAF East Moor, Halifax BIII aircraft MZ 686 6U-U, while taking off for a raid to Hamburg, Germany, had the starboard outer engine catch fire, which caused the aircraft to swerve off the runway at 105 MPH, break in half, catch fire and explode. Miraculously, the crew were able to evacuate the crashed aircraft and they all survived Pilot Officer VL Valde (RCAF) (Sergeant Valde at this time), Pilot Officer DR Andrews (RCAF), Flying Officer JG Willis (RCAF), Warrant Officer Class 2 JR Pelletier (RCAF), Warrant Officer Class 2 RA Evans (RCAF), Sergeant JE MacDonald (RCAF), FS JJ Conroy (RCAF) and Sergeant G Grant (RAF) all survived this crash There was a second 415 squadron Halifax III aircraft lost on this operation.
