When his CEF unit reached England Thompson transferred to the RFC as an Observer. After training he was assigned to 34 Sqn in France in 1917-08-03 flying RE-8s. In November, 1917 he applied for pilot training and was sent to the 72TS Montrose, Scotland. He took off and was climbing away when the engine lost power. He tried to turn back but the aircraft stalled and nose-dived to the ground at Charleton Rd. Lt. Thompson was killed in the crash.
