Spence enlisted in the 22nd Howitzer Battery, 65th Btn, CEF, in March of 1915 while a student at Queen's University. He transferred to the RFC 1917-11-05 as an observer, receiving his observers wings in February, 1918. He died of wounds and injuries received in action when his AW-FK8 (C8526) which was on artillery direction work at the time, was shot down and crashed on 1918-05-23. He died of his injuries two days later on 1918-05-25 at the No 6. Casualty Clearing Station.
