1917-03-07: On March 1, the balloon Simpson was in was hit by enemy incendiary fire. He refused to abandon the balloon, until he had helped his fellow observer clear first, and as a result was caught up and enveloped in the burning remnants. He was severely burnt and died from his injuries, six days later Posthumously nominated for a Military Cross, it was awarded six weeks after his death.
