408 Goose Squadron (For Freedom) RAF Leeming, Halifax II aircraft DT 750 EQ-U, returning from a successful operation to Cologne, Germany and preparing to land had the port outer engine catch fire at about 300 feet. The pilot applied power to climb and allow his crew to bale but the port inner engine lost power. The rear gunner, Flying Officer JC Parker (RCAF)(USA) baled first but too low for his parachute to properly deploy and he was killed. At about 900 feet altitude the rest of the crew, except the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Boosey baled and all survived. Flight Lieutenant Boosey crash-landed the stricken aircraft and survived FS M Samuels (RCAF) (injured), Sergeant DC Horner (RCAF), Flight Lieutenant RHG Boosey (RAFVR), Pilot Officer PE Mitchell (RAFVR), Pilot Officer PR Quance (RAAF) (injured) and Pilot Officer DWT Giblin (RAAF) all survived the crash Flight Lieutenant Boosey would be awarded a DFC for his actions on this flight FS Samuels, Sergeant Horner and Pilot Officer Quance would all be killed 1943-06-20 when 408 Squadron Halifax II aircraft JD 107 EQ-Y was shot down by a night fighter over France |
