Lt Ross was killed when one wing of his Corsair aircraft folded on take-off from HMS Formidable which at that time was deployed for attacks on Japanese mainland and also providing air cover and support for the US and British ships of Task Force 37.

He had previously been involved in an attack on the German ship Tirpitz.
