Shot down by a German aircraft. *L.S.* 1917-10-01: Rayner was killed when his DH-4 was shot down by an enemy aircraft near Berbure on a return trip from a bombing raid on Carvin. His gunner 2Lt John Lawrence Hughes (British) also died in the crash.
