1916-10-28, McKay and Arthur Knight were on patrol over the Somme when they were attacked by Oswald Boelcke. In the ensuing battle, Boelcke was killed when his Albatros collided with that of Erwin Böhme. Knight was killed the following year when his SPAD was shot down by a German two-seater. McKay shot down 10 enemy aircraft between July, 1916 and his death in 1917.
