3 Personnel Reception Center, Bournemouth. Flying Officer McCracken was awarded the D.F.C. on October 1, 1944, when assigned to 428 Squadron. The citation reads, "This officer has completed numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage, and devotion to duty." Flying Officer McCracken was fatally injured in a swimming accident when he dove off the pier at Bournemouth, England.
