At the end of 1917 Heney achieved an early ambition by joining the RFC as an observer. He joined No 2 Sqn at Hesdigneul as observer in the A.W. FK8 then in use by the squadron. Heney was killed in a flying accident in RE-8, B-5786, with Lt Collins as pilot., 1918-03-09 with . Lt Bower Heney was buried alongside Lt Robert Collins at Choques Military Cemetery.
