A portion of his wing broke off while he was practicing aerial evolutions. Crashed from 7000 feet. *S.L.* 1917-08-09: Hanlan was killed when the top plane parted after a loop on a practice flight, aircraft went into a steep spiral and crashed at Docking Hall, near Bircham-Newton, Norfolk, England.
