1917-05-26: Hains' aircraft DH.4, N-5963 was last seen near Osst Dunkerque Bains, posted missing, presumed dead, along with his pilot FltSubLt William Houston-Stewart (British), on a reconnaissance mission to reconnoiter Ostende. His aircraft had fallen behind the lead and was last seen a mile astern, heading for shore. Their bodies were recovered and buried by the Germans.
