Menzies transferred from the CEF to the RFC, and after training was sent to 33 Home Defense Sqn as Machine Gun Officer, where he managed to get occasional flights in as air-gunner in the FE. His death occurred on takeoff in misty conditions on a night anti-Zeppelin patrol. His aircraft took off and was rising when it crashed into trees on the edge of the aerodrome. His pilot, 2Lt Carey Pinnock (British) was not hurt in the crash.
