1918-06-10: Bender was killed in a flying accident, east of Camp Rathburn Aerodrome; while flying JN4a, C-1004. He was assigned to go to 4,000 feet before putting the machine into a spin, and to pull it out of the spin and resume normal flight. He did not succeed in doing this and died in the crash.
