Austin crashed during basic flight training at Leaside Aerodrome, Toronto, on 1917-07-18. He recovered from the crash injuries but before being released from hospital was diagnosed with Meningitis, from which he died 1917-09-23. His mother claimed his body and took it back to Vancouver for burial.
