Beechcraft Model 90 King Air, C-FMFS (Serial No.).

The Canadian Forces (CF) took delivery of two second-hand early-production Model 200 Super King Airs leased from Awood Air in 1990. These were given the designation CT-145 under the CF's identification system and were used as multi-engine trainers. One was subsequently returned to the lessor and a third Model 200 placed into service in order that the two aircraft used would have the same cockpit layout. The two aircraft were replaced by eight civilian-operated 90 Model King Airs in 1995.

On 3 Oct 2018 highly modified King Air 350ER surveillance aircraft were approved for sale by the US Government to the Government of Canada for an estimated cost of US$300 million. These RCAF aircraft will fly in the manned airborne ISR (MAISR) role, and will be equipped with unique modifications for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. The RCAF will use these aircraft to improve the ability of its Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM), to meet current and future threats, strengthen its homeland defense and the combined defense of North America and support coalition partners overseas.

Reported March 3rd, 2024 Two of the new Beechcraft King Air 350ER CE-145C Vigilance aircraft are still with L3 Harris in the USA for integration work and painting.

The three King Airs were registered to Textron Aviation at Redstone-Arsenal (AL) and have the following construction numbers: FL-1218(N1218H), FL-1228 (N1228C), and FL-1233 (N1233K). The first aircraft, N1218H, was delivered on National Aviation Day in Canada, 23 February 2024. CANSOFCOM revealed the aircraft have been given the designation CE-145C according to the Canadian Military Type Designation System. The chosen name for the aircraft is Vigilance. Source Scramble.nl via Mike Kaehler

These aircraft are typically flown with a crew of three including two pilots and a systems operator with a wide variety of modern technology under his or her control. The aircraft will be equipped with three WESCAM MX-15D electro-optical and infrared imaging sensors; three AN/AAR-47B(V)2 missile and laser warning systems; three AN/ALE-47 countermeasure dispenser systems; three VORTEX Dual RF Ku LOS transceivers; three COMSEC modules (KGV-135A); two APM-424(V)5 transponder test sets; five KIV-77 Mode 4/5 crypto applique computers for identification friend or foe (IFF); three AN/APX-119 IFF digital civil and military transponders; six ARC-210 multimode voice and data transceivers; and three KG-250X National Security Agency-certified type 1 inline network encryptors. Leased from Air Tindi for use by the Multi-Engine Utility Flight at 8 Wing, Trenton, ON. The a/c departed on 31 Jan 2022 on a training mission with three crew members on board.

The aircraft departed 8 Wing Trenton on an Instrument Flight Rule flight plan, with a destination of ThunderBay Airport, ON. Following a routine climb out and cruise, the aircraft was cleared for the RNAV Z 25 instrument approach into Thunder Bay, ON. The a/c was configured for the approach and flown utilizing automation. Approximately two miles back from the runway and with the airport visual, the pilot elected to continue the remainder of the approach manually and disconnectedthe autopilot. As the aircraft crossed over the runway threshold with a height above ground ofapproximately 50 ft, the pilot flying moved both power levers to idle with the intent of landing. Aleft yaw quickly developed followed by a rapid drop of the left wing. The pilot monitoring theapproach took control and initiated an overshoot, however the left wing tip contacted the runwaysurface and the aircraft progressed uncontrolled into the snow-covered infield. Once the aircraftcame to rest, the three crew members egressed the aircraft. The a/c sustained very seriousdamage and the pilot flying suffered a minor injury, while the other crew members were notinjured.

The investigation determined that the a/c was documented serviceable prior to the flightand that no issues were evident to the crew before the power levers were brought to idle. Post accident analysis of the recovered aircraft flight data and components determined that a part within the propeller speed governing system failed to function nominally, specifically the beta valve or the beta solenoid. This led to the left-hand propeller windmilling, which was the mostlikely cause of the accident. Since the beta valve was damaged and internal parts lost during theaccident sequence, a definitive determination of its serviceability could not be conducted. Kestrel Publications
