1914-09-16: Janney was an Army Captain who, despite not being qualified to fly, was appointed by Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia in the Canadian government, as officer commanding the Canadian Aviation Corps (CAC). The CAC was equipped with a second-hand Burgess-Dunne float-plane purchased in the United States. Along with Lieutenant William F.N. Sharpe, who had had a few flying lessons and Staff Sergeant Harry A. Farr named as mechanic, the trio and the crate left with the first contingent for England on 1914-09-30. There, they were ignored and their aeroplane left in a shed, to rot away.
