Hines was an observer with 62 Squadron in September 1918. That month, he and his pilot (Ltn. P..S. Manley) scored five victories flying the Bristol F2b. They were last seen attacking an enemy aircraft East of Douai while on patrol. They were shot down and captured by the Germans on 27 September. Both men were repatriated when the war ended.
