Larter was posted to HMS Riviera, a seaplane tender with the British Navy working on the Belgium coast. 1917-12-09: He was presumed lost and probably drowned when he failed to return from a patrol of the English Channel. No sign of his aircraft was found, nor was his body recovered. His W/T operator was W/T Op 1st Reginald John Robins, (British) who also died.

Flt. sub-Lieutenant Norman Ivan Larter has no known grave.
